Book Review: A Work in Progress

There was no way this book wasn’t going to make an appearance here. I will say right up that Connor Franta, YouTuber and Author, is one of my Top 20 Ever-Inspiring people in the whole world. Not only have I read his book, but I have also listened to it on where he personally narrates (he also got me addicted to Because I have spent many life minutes binge-watching his YouTube videos, which lead to me reading his amazing book, I am going to personally plug his channel: ConnorFranta @ YouTube.

Connor bravely and admirably came out as gay in one of his videos in 2014. Even before then, in his videos, he established himself as an insightful, inspiring, open-minded and passionate person. The world truly needs more people like him. Reading his autobiography, A Work in Progress, I couldn’t put it down. I read it all in one afternoon. The title alone is a poignant choice, reminding us all that we are ever-evolving and it is never too late to chase our dreams and continually better ourselves.

Connor opens his book with an amusing reminiscence of how he came to have an interest in making videos from a young age. Throughout his book, Connor continues to share stories of his life, and his rise to YouTuber fame. But perhaps the most prominent theme is his emotional rollercoaster of coming to terms with his sexuality and his choice to come out via his YouTube channel after many years of trying to deny to himself that he was gay for fear of judgement. To just watch the video, it is easy to see how much of a massive personal step this was for him. Watching that, I was left simply wanting to give him a hug, and tell him he is an inspiration.

Connor’s book is not at all just for young people looking for a role model in their own struggles with their sexuality, and learning how to navigate this often cruel world without sacrificing parts of who they truly are. Without a doubt, there is a significant percentage of Connor’s fanbase that admire him and look up to him because they can identify with his experiences. Though, they most certainly aren’t all that his fans are. He is simply an inspiring person with admirable morals and values. It is difficult not to respect him on the simple fact that he is true to himself, and wants to inspire others to do the same. These are values I hold myself, and explore in my own writing. He, along with other YouTubers, are a source of inspiration for one of my novel characters.

Connor’s book is a pleasant read, but listening to him narrate it on Audible gave a deeper sense of connection to his words through his own voice. His words reflect his peaceful and observant personality that we see in his videos. This guy sees a beauty in the world many are blind to.

I give this book a resounding 5 Stars, unwaveringly. Do yourself a favour: read it, listen to it, and if you want to take one more step further, check out some of his videos.
